Offshore Wind Farm
|
Connected up only a few miles off the coast of the power plant is a very extensive offshore wind farm. This offshore wind farm is absolutely vital to the power plant. It generates a large amount of electricity from the prevailing winds over the ocean and when the winds are high can provide more energy than almost any of the other resources.
The wind farm is built in a relatively shallow region of water, which means there is no need for expensive floating platforms for the wind turbines. They are the latest technology Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines with the capacity to rotate slightly in order to face into the prevailing wind. |
Because the offshore wind farm is so crucial to the electricity output of the complex as a whole, they are monitored and maintained closely to make sure they are working properly and effectively. Research is undertaken in the facilities on site to look at any possible ways of improving them too, so that they can be updated in the future and work even better. The most significant issue with the wind farm is its reliance on the climate which means that on days when the wind levels and speeds are down then its production levels drop dramatically. It's at times like this when the geothermal and biomass plants become more important.
The offshore wind farm is connected back to the mainland via the Offshore Wind Base, which is positioned on the coast beside the tidal and wave base. This building is responsible for the monitoring of the turbines and remaining in contact with the Business Centre from which reports of the climate come through, helping the offshore wind section manage when the turbines will be working at maximum capacity and to determine a prediction for their electricity output.
